Salazaar lands opening day feature

TrainerIrfan Ghatala's aging champion Salazaar (Anjar Alam-up) had an easy measure of the opposition in the 1,400m Rajyotsava Trophy, the feature event at the Bangalore races, on Sunday, the opening day of the winter season. However, a heavily fancied Ghatala’s other runner, Cavallini (A. Imran Khan); after a very slow start, went down meekly to a friendless S. Ganapathy’s runner, Manifest (D. Patel), in the Ranganathittu Plate.

The afternoon also witnessed trainer Suleiman Attaollahi’s course favourite, Malwa (Trevor Patel) coming good as trainer Pradeep Annaiah’s fancied runner, Attorney General (S. John), in the Vidhana Soudha Cup, was a trifle late to issue a challenge in the home straight.

The sporting activities, at the racecourse, were conducted according to the norms laid down by the state government – without spectators. Totalisators and bookmakers were the other notable absentees. Betting in the grey market, too, was lukewarm as big players had decided to adopt wait and watch policy.
